Build a hand-tool set around the fasteners you use
Metric and SAE sizes are separate measurement systems. Choose the size specified for the fastener; a close-looking substitute can damage its corners. Socket drive size describes the connection to the ratchet or wrench, rather than the nut or bolt size.
Compare the listed size range and individual pieces in a set. Deep sockets can reach longer studs and recessed nuts, while clearance may favor a shorter socket. For powered impact tools, use sockets expressly rated for impact use.
Do I need both SAE and metric tools?
Check the equipment you maintain. A mixed set can cover both systems, but the actual included sizes matter more than its total piece count.
Will a socket fit any ratchet?
The square drive must match. An adapter changes the connection and may affect clearance and permitted use; check its rating and the tool instructions.
Can a torque wrench replace a breaker bar?
Use it as the manufacturer permits. Loosening seized fasteners may exceed its intended use or affect calibration.
